A Chat with Ashley Richards & Robyn Germanese - September Artists Of The Month

Citizen Vintage

On September 10th Citizen Vintage celebrated the new window installation by Ashley & Robyn.

Taking inspiration from 1960s Italian fashion, Prada`s 2016 F/W runway and the playful feeling of Godard's film, "Une femme est une femme," Robyn Germanese and Ashley Richards's surreal window installation will transport the viewer into a Euro- mod world filled with pastels, pops of bright colours and over sized shapes. In one window, a geometric ladder shows off Citizen Vintage's collection of Autumn shoes. In the opposite window, a large mobile with Alexander Calder inspired shapes is suspended above a manniquin structure where over-sized tote bags designed and made by Germanese and Richards are hung.

Artist Interview:

Ashley Richards

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be everything when I was a kid. I wanted to be an actress, national geographic photographer, ballerina, mother, singer, archaeologist. You name it and I wanted to be it. Then I discovered art and realized that in a sense I could be all of those things as a visual artist.

What are you listening to right now?

I have been on a big tribe called quest kick lately. I have been listening to a lot of 90's hip hop and it's just good in so many ways.

In 5 words, how would you describe your aesthetic?

Whimsical, ethereal, eclectic, feminine, thoughtful.

If your window display was a planet what celebrities would live there?

Oh Fellini and Godard would definitely be there as well as Jane Birkin, Anna Karenina and Charlotte and Serge Gainsbourg as well. It would be the coolest planet you could imagine.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?

I started painting classes when I was 8 and it was always a part of my history. From painting murals at school to helping my dad with carpentry work. I graduated with a BFA in studio arts from Concordia, with a minor in art history and art education and took a few interior design and set design courses after graduating.

What are you working on right now?

Right now we are brainstorming or next window display and I am in the process of creating a blog loosely inspired by the Selby. Taking and talking to friends about the importance of their favorite spaces with a focus on places we love that might not necessarily be the most aesthetically obvious.  Basically my brain space is being taken up by the idea of spaces.

Robyn Germanese

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up?

I wanted to be an actress, artist, and to have the capacity to free animals from crappy situations and put them in happier ones.

What are you listening to right now?

I'm in a constant flux... in one day it will be 60's and 70's rock and Psychedelic, Ye Ye, Thai 60s pop music, Shangri- Las, Elis Regina, Tina Turner, the Oblivians, the Cramps, Cocteau Twins, Jarboe, The Make-up , Human Eye, Nu Sensae, 90s rap/R&B like Usher, Janet Jackson, Trina, The Detroit Cobras, Dirty Beaches, Surf, Osmani Garcia, J. Balvin, Reggaeton, Marikena Monti, Caribbean, Latino.

In 5 words, how would you describe your aesthetic?

Weird, wild, bright, dark, sex

If your window display was a planet what celebrities would live there?

Weirdos and rich people like Noel Fielding, Michelle Lamy,  Rihanna, Roberto Begnigni,  Yohji Yamamoto, Gael Garcia Bernal, Dario Argento, Rei Kawakubo to name a few.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?

Didn't go to art school but a lot of people thought otherwise because all my friends went and i was always hanging out there.

What are you working on right now?

An exciting new collaboration, my fashion line Eating Black Feathers, the next visual displays.
